Day at the Capitol

Together with the MSC, SPAC hosts an annual Day at the Capitol in Lansing, which is an opportunity for us to advocate in the legislative process.

On April 23, 2025, the Junior Leagues of Michigan gathered in Lansing for the annual Day at the Capitol, a signature event hosted by the Michigan State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC). Members from eight regional leagues came together to engage in advocacy, education, and legislative dialogue, all in support of the League’s mission to advance women’s leadership for community impact.

The day began with a welcome and updates from the Michigan State Council, followed by a keynote address from Eric Patrice of The Breaking Bread Village. Attendees participated in a dynamic training session titled “Swiping Left on Politics: How to Stay Nonpartisan Without Losing Your Sanity”, which emphasized the League’s commitment to issue-focused, nonpartisan advocacy. The training provided tools for engaging lawmakers across the political spectrum while remaining mission-driven and fact-based.

SPAC reaffirmed its focus on three key policy areas: Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence, Human Trafficking, and Women’s Health. The newly adopted women’s health priority includes support for the “Momnibus” legislative package (SB 29–34, 36–39), which aims to address racial disparities in maternal health. These bills propose measures such as establishing a maternal mortality review team, enabling patients to report obstetric racism, and expanding civil rights protections for pregnant and lactating individuals.

In addition, the League advocated for Senate Bill 18, which would allow foster youth to retain their benefits and savings, helping them build financial stability upon exiting the system. This bill reflects the League’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and promoting equity in Michigan’s communities.

The event concluded with a visit to the House of Representatives, floor recognition, and a group photo on the Capitol steps. Through events like Day at the Capitol, the Junior Leagues of Michigan continue to be a powerful force for change, fostering bipartisan cooperation and advancing policies that improve lives across the state.
